The Picos de Europa trekking with guide is a high mountain hut-to-hut route through the Picos de Europa National Park. One of the most challenging and physically demanding treks you can do in Spain.

History tells that in the year 25 BC, the Vadinians, one of the last Cantabrian tribes that faced the Romans, sought refuge in the Vindio mountains. Today, these mountains are known as the Picos de Europa.

The Anillo de Picos passes through those same limestone mountains. Technically it is a difficult itinerary due to the steepness of its terrain: endless couloirs, dizzying slopes, dense fog, and limestone rock that traps and saturates you at the same time. This is what makes this route something truly different.

With Asturguías, your Anillo de Picos guided trek will be unforgettable. And you’ll come back for the Extreme Ring!

The Anillo de Picos is a complicated challenge that requires physical preparation, but it rewards you with landscapes of overwhelming beauty, dreamy sunsets, magical forests and beautiful mountain villages.

The Picos de Europa Ring is a circular high mountain route designed by the refuge wardens. It crosses the interior of the National Park, connecting the different mountain huts. It consists of three circuits of varying difficulty, duration and elevation, where each day you leave from one refuge to arrive at another.

    Itinerary

    01

Stage 1. Posada de Valdeón – Vega de Ario. 14 km 1300m.

We will begin our feat on the León side, warming up in the Cares gorge, first through the town of Cain, to continue through the impressive gorge to the entrance of the challenging Canal de Trea, the first meeting with the well-known verticality of Picos. It is arduous, but not infinite, and it ends with arguably one of the best views of the central massif. Totally worth it. You will always remember the lentils of Vega de Ario Refuge.
    02

Stage 2. Vega de Ario – Vegarredonda. 16 km 400m+.

In this softer stage, we will make a detour to visit the wonderful Lakes of Covadonga, we will descend to 1100m of altitude and after walking through this emblematic place, we will go back to the Vegarredonda refuge, where we will spend the night.
    03

    Stage 3. Vegarredonda – Vegabaño. 16 km 1000m+.

The grand stage. We get up a little early and we will ascend to the “Col Les Merines” at more than 2000m to enter the heart of the massif in the “horcada de Santa María”, “Jou de las Pozas” and when in “Vegahuerta” we will be speechless facing the great South face of Peñasanta. From here, we descend to 1340m to the bucolic refuge of Vegabaño. The one and only.
    04

Stage 4. Vegabaño – Posada de Valdeón.

Smooth final stage, in which you will only have to go up to the Dobres pass, crossing magical oak, beech and holly forests, to descend gently to the starting point.
