Why Visit Vegarredonda?

The Vegarredonda mountain refuge is one of the most iconic destinations in the Picos de Europa National Park. Thanks to its privileged location beneath the impressive Peña Santa massif, it has become the perfect starting point for hikers, mountaineers and nature lovers who want to explore the spectacular landscapes of the Western Massif.

Our guided hike to Vegarredonda follows comfortable mountain trails through extensive alpine meadows, traditional shepherd settlements and limestone scenery that has shaped this unique landscape for thousands of years. Along the way, our certified mountain guides explain the geology, flora and wildlife that make this National Park one of Spain’s most valuable protected areas.

    The Gateway to Peña Santa

The refuge is well known as the traditional base camp for ascents to Peña Santa and many other classic summits of the Picos de Europa. Even visitors who are not climbers can enjoy magnificent panoramic views, peaceful mountain pastures and one of the most authentic high-mountain environments in Asturias.

    History and Mountain Tradition

For generations, shepherds have used these high pastures during the summer months, creating a cultural landscape where nature and traditional livestock farming still coexist. Walking to Vegarredonda allows visitors to discover this heritage while enjoying a relaxed hike suitable for most people.

The nearby Ordiales Viewpoint, closely linked to Pedro Pidal and the origins of the first Spanish National Park, makes this excursion even more interesting from both a historical and scenic perspective.
