The Ponga Reserve is one of the best preserved natural areas in northern Spain and one of Asturias’ hidden treasures. This guided hike is suitable for all audiences and offers the opportunity to discover ancient forests, spectacular mountain scenery and traditional villages in a peaceful environment far from the crowds.
Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2018, the Ponga Reserve is home to extensive beech and oak forests, crystal-clear rivers and some of the most impressive viewpoints in eastern Asturias. Its proximity to the Picos de Europa National Park makes it one of the region’s most valuable natural destinations.
Our guided walk takes you through one of Spain’s best-preserved forests, where centuries-old beech trees, holly bushes and native oak woods create a magical landscape throughout the year. Along the route you will enjoy magnificent views of peaks such as Tiatordos, Maciédome and Recuencu while learning about the wildlife, flora and traditions of this unique mountain area.
The Ponga Reserve is also an excellent destination for nature lovers interested in birdwatching, photography or simply enjoying the silence of one of Asturias’ least explored landscapes.
Unlike many popular destinations, the Ponga Reserve has remained largely untouched by mass tourism. Small villages, traditional farming and dense native forests preserve the authentic character of rural Asturias, making every visit a truly memorable experience.
Throughout the hike, our local guides explain the history of the reserve, the importance of its protected ecosystems and the close relationship between the local communities and the surrounding mountains.
